Overhaulin’ A fine example of Design Research
I was watching TV this afternoon and caught an episode of Overhaulin’. On this show Chip Foose, a famous care designer, and a team of mechanics rebuild cars in one week for deserving people, along the same lines as Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
While I really liked the show for the cars I noticed today that during the design phase of the project Chip Foose sits down with an ‘insider’ [read: family or friend] of the cars owner to determine what they would like. Interestingly this process is very much the same as I practice with digital media. Chip spends a good amount of time listening to the insider and making a long list of what he hears. In addition to that, on the episode I saw, they visit the owner and discovered that his shirt was the same color as the paint they had chosen.
There was nothing ground breaking about the research they are doing but it was really nice to see a good example in a totally unexpected place.
